If you are a blogger, blog commenting is surely a strategy to follow.
Why? Is it because everyone talks about blog commenting?
Or is it because your fellow bloggers are actively commenting on blog posts of other bloggers?
Perhaps yes – as you can see, those bloggers that do blog commenting consistently get to the top quite easily.
But that’s not the only reason to do it. Not just because your fellow bloggers are doing it.
I know, every blogger has this idea in the back of their mind – to leave comments on other blogs.
But it can be a challenging thing to do consistently – the main reason being lack of time.
“I have no time” is the easiest excuse anybody can give to not do anything.
But, if you get past that excuse and actually do it, the results can be amazing.
Blog commenting is one such piece of action that you should do in your online business to reap awesome benefits.
If I have not convinced you enough, I briefly list the benefits of blog commenting – as I see it – in this blog post.
Nevertheless I agree that even if you are pretty convinced, if you don’t have a system in place, you cannot be consistent with blog commenting.
Which is why I have shared the exact system that works for me in this blog post.
For now, let us talk about its benefits.
Build genuine relationships
I’ve said this many times in many occasions; but I will repeat it here.
The most enjoyable thing that I do in my business is connecting with new people!
I LOVE that and that’s one of those things that doesn’t feel like “work” to me.
Blog commenting is actually a portal to help me make those connections.
And blog commenting is enjoyable in itself. Only if you don’t force it upon yourself.
Then it becomes a chore. And subsequently, it gets to feel like “work”. Then your blog comments sound more like being left for the sake of it!
And at this point, the time and energy you put into blog commenting goes waste and you too stop enjoying it.
You should actually use blog commenting as a portal to meet new people and connect with them.
As a first, you can establish a relationship with the blog owner if you visit his/her blog regularly and leave comments.
Since you will be exchanging opinions, carry on with conversations, appreciating each others’ work, it is pretty easy to break the ice and start a genuine relationship with any blogger this way.
Second, you can also strengthen current relationships.
Build branding
You do know about branding, right? It is a way of establishing a trait that belongs to your company/business in the minds of your target audience.
It can be your company/blog name, a logo, a picture of you – whatever.
But there should be a branding that you do consistently for your business.
This way it will be much easier for you to communicate with your clients and target audience.
They will be easily able to relate to your website or a product when they look at your brand establishment.
With blog commenting, you can do it with your comment voice, your gravatar image, your name and so on.
Trust me, it is much easier this way.
Easily make yourself an authority in your niche
While you do blog commenting, you voice your opinion all over the internet. You appear in multiple blogs in your niche.
People get to see your face in multiple blogs and read your expert opinion (assuming you leave awesome comments).
But when you don’t comment and just blog on your own website, people can only see your face and read your expert opinion on your blog. Not elsewhere.
Blog commenting puts you in the radar of the readers in your niche.
When they think about someone to ask for help or expert advice, it is much easier to have them remember your name/face if you are familiar via blog commenting.
An added advantage is the “easy” factor.
All the above mentioned benefits apply for guest blogging as well – but guest blogging is a higher profile thing when compared to blog commenting.
You need to have established a relationship with the host blogger, pitch your guest post idea and have it approved, blog post accepted and published before you can go “live”. But blog commenting is a lot easier.
You can just pop in, say hello and cast your opinion on any blog without having to go through stages of approval.
And you don’t also have to prepare a high quality guest post carefully.
You can casually drop in and leave a comment – of course, a high quality, insightful comment I assume – and win everyone’s attention.
And, I don’t have to mention that consistent blog commenting will help you land guest blogging opportunities with much ease.
Get leads and close deals
You surprised? Don’t be.
There are various examples of leading bloggers who were able to skyrocket their blogging success just with blog commenting.
And that includes getting leads and closing deals!
I always rely on blog commenting and guest posting as a way to connect with new peeps.
Well I don’t say hello and start a conversation in a guest post or a blog comment – I do that in an email, of course.
But instead of sending out a cold email, I break the ice and make myself recognizable via a blog comment or a guest post.
And then, when people approach me for enquiries on my services or when I approach people, it is easy to get the conversation going because we sort of know each other beforehand.
Also by consistently making blog comments around, I establish my authority and my target audience get to know my expertise in the field.
This has helped me open up a lot of service enquiries and product sales.
It is because, instead of having to establish my expertise and authority to my blog visitors anew, that part is already completed for me through my blog commenting.
Keep yourself up-to-date in the industry
When you are on a mission to comment on blogs, you naturally have to read numerous blog posts, right? And that keeps you up-to-date in the industry without you putting extra effort.
You will realise that this is a sweet by product of blog commenting.
You don’t have to carve out a special time slot each week to catch up with the happenings in your niche. When you are into blog commenting you naturally have to read a lot of blogs in your niche.
And that keeps you updated. You also stay up to date with your fellow bloggers.
Spy on your fellow bloggers and learn
Yup, yup. When you are into blog commenting you can easily spy on your fellow bloggers (note that I used fellow bloggers instead of competitors).
It is in general a good practice to keep tabs (or… ahem, spy) on your fellow bloggers.
You might want to observe what your fellow bloggers are up to.
It is essential that you take notice of the methods they use – say, for affiliate marketing, email marketing or a product launch.
This won’t be possible if you cave in and only publish blog posts on your own site.
You can observe and learn from the others only by visiting the blogs of others.
Right? Right!
Now go on, and start with blog commenting
I always highly recommend both beginner and advanced bloggers to do blog commenting. It has got a lot of benefits.
From traffic, to SEO benefits, to gaining traction and acquiring contacts – blog commenting does it all.
So don’t miss out on the benefits.
I can understand that you might not have time everyday to leave comments – but try to carve out a few minutes each week to catch up on!

Loved your article. Your points were so on target! When I learned about blog commenting it was strictly for SEO back links as you said. But, as you stated it began to feel like work. I no longer enjoyed it because it was more of a task instead of learning.
But, I grew up and noticed as I matured how to turn something that I enjoyed doing (blog commenting) back into something that I looked forward to doing everyday.
If I could give a couple of suggestions to help bloggers learn to enjoy blog commenting here they are:
1) Point number one is realize why you are really there. I visit other blog post and articles while researching a topic that I am writing about. Think about that every day as bloggers research the web researching you’re next topic. All you have to do is remember to think the post Rider for their contribution and share with them what you learned. How simple is that. You’re already on their site reading their material and learning. Now all you have to do is share with the person who wrote the article how it impacted you.
2). My second point is to share with the blog writer and his audience at least one aspect that you know of that they may have missed. On this point make sure it is a very very insightful point.
This method a Blog commenting is successful for the following reasons meaning of which you have already stated:
1 – the rider appreciates your comment and pat on the back for his/her hard work.
2 – it showcases your expertise in bringing to light a point the writer may have missed.
3 – and people reading your comment will recognize you as someone they want to meet and follow you as well.

Hey Bubbie,
Thanks for sharing your insights – very helpful indeed and you have elaborated very well on your points.
Making an impact is what a good blog comment does (and I must say that your comment has done that neatly).
Yes blog commenting helps building relationships, to build branding and also to make people recognize your voice/opinion on a topic.
Thanks so much for stopping by and making a beautiful comment.
Cheers,
Jane.

Hey Jane,
Blog Commenting is perhaps one of the most powerful blogging tool ever invented. It works really well and if done consistently, getting a blog active can be pretty easy!
Totally agree with you about commenting being a fun activity, rather than work. There are way too many positives when commenting like you mentioned meeting new people or discovering useful content – it has to be fun to keep going. I have done 20 to 30 comments everyday for years and it can only be done if you truly enjoy it.
Thanks,
– Shantanu
Jane says
Hey Shantanu,
Yes – it is a very powerful tool. But one can see substantial results only if done consistently.
20-30 comments a day – certainly, you can’t do it if you don’t see fun in it 🙂
Thanks for stopping by!
Cheers,
Jane.

Jane,
I think that blog commenting is an important part of the referral marketing process. You get to know, like, trust, and then do business with other (bloggers) individuals.
Jane says

Hi Jane,
I’ve been using blogging commenting as one of the blog promotion techniques for my blog for about 8 months now. You’re right, it is a great way to meet other bloggers.
Since I’ve made it a point to take the time to comment on fellow bloggers blog’s, I’ve met some amazing people. You can’t expect to meet other bloggers if all you do is publish new content on your blog.
Just by taking the time to make friends, I’ve managed to write over 28 guest posts on other blogs.
None of this would’ve happened if I hadn’t taken the time to comment on other bloggers.
If you are going to take the time to comment, make sure that you’re doing it correctly. Don’t focus on the backlink.
Focus on building a friend and leave a genuine comment. I still find a lot of bloggers who leave nothing but spam comments on my blog.
Those comments don’t even get read, I just trash them. Oh and if you really want to build online friendships, bloggers should take the time to add a Gravatar to their blog.
It still amazes me how many bloggers are still blogging using the mystery man avatar.
Thanks for sharing these tips and you’re right, it’s all about consistency.
Have a great day 🙂
Susan

Hey Susan,
That’s the point! You can never expect to connect with other bloggers if you just keep publishing content on your own blog and promote your content alone.
And yes, it is totally funny that how people still survive with the mystery man avatar hahaha.
Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts.
Cheers,
Jane.

Hey Jane, great post. To comment or not to comment is a question that is always in my mind. I go through phases of commenting a lot and then I drop off for a while. I try to only comment on posts when I have read them and have something to add. Obviously, commenting can also be an important part of building links and relationships and as a result it can take a lot of time but it is worth it once you put in the effort. Thanks
Jane says
Hey Brian,
Indeed it takes a lot of time. However, I find it to be totally worth the effort. As it helps you with building relationships and also backlinks, you have to be very careful and maintain the standard.
Thanks for stopping by.
Cheers,
Jane.

I love that we can see some bloggers here that I personally admire and their contribution to your article. This is also one of the blog commenting benefits.
When you are building your blog credibility, it’s great if you can attract some experts to engage with your blogs, that gives your content more value.
Jane says
Oh yes Jarvee – that’s so true. I love when other bloggers participate in the discussion – a great thing with blog commenting.
